Rapid Viz - The Definition Today

So What is Rapid Visualization?
If you've ever taking an art class you might have heard of the term "Rapid Visualization"...a name given to a drawing technique that allows the artist to develop an idea from early concept all the way through to a finish product, all while never starting over along that path of development.  A drawing technique that "evolves" as you keep moving forward.  For those of you that enjoy surfing Wiki, the official definition of this technique is as follows:   

Rapid visualization (also known as rapid vis) is a technique used by graphic artists to create a drawing of a concept in several stages. After the completion of thumbnail drawings, a preferred drawing is selected and rendered in full size, usually in pencil. Then a sheet of paper (layout bond) is put over the drawing and it is redrawn/traced with corrections, additions, and alterations. This process is repeated several times, often with color added at some stage, until the image is perfected to the desire of the artist.

The purpose of rapid vis is to take an idea from concept to accurate rendering without having to start over from scratch each time an edit or alteration is desired. The completed drawing is usually still considered a rough layout or comprehensive for approval submission (as opposed to finished art for framing or camera-ready art for reproduction).

In true BIMevolution form, my hopes are to help redefine and repurpose the "Rapid Visualization" technique as it can be applied to the ever "evolving" pieces of BIM.  So what are those evolving pieces?
  • The Model itself - Level of detail and visualization needs throughout all phases
  • The "i" in BIM - the Information attached to elements within the model that will be used throughout all phases (4D, 5D, 6D, and beyond) 
How Does Rapid Visualization Apply to the Model?
If you take away the "i" you're left with a "BM". (i know what you're thinking here) or in more politcally correct terms the "Building Model".  This model is constantly changing from design concept through final design, and asbuilts.  Rapid Visualization, as it will be discussed in later postings, will focus on the evolving Level of Detail (LOD) in the model and the visuals needed for design approvals, etc.


How Does Rapid Visualization Apply to the "i" in BIM?
All too often I see companies focusing on the "BM", while rarely concerning themselves with the "i".  This might be OK if you're only building a model to generate Construction Documents.  I however, believe that BIM's true potential lies in the evolution of the "i" or "Information" being generated throughout design and all phases beyond.  In true artist form, the Rapid Visualization approach allows us to conceptualize, define and append to the "i" in BIM...all while refraining from building silos of information that typically require multiple players at the table to start from scratch as design changes occur.

Rapid Viz - Gyp Board Rendering Technique

Gyp Board Rendering Technique
This first rendering technique mimics the look, feel, and purpose of yesterday’s hand built models...a technique our design predecessors used to rely on for their 3D visualization needs.  We'll answer those basic questions you should always ask before generating any Visualization.


The Basic Questions:
What’s the goal for this Technique? 
This technique can be used to sale the “truth of form" in your design elements…As you can see from the image above, it is minus any distractions that could potentially slow down the design process. Primary goal is to generate this level of visualization on the fly, prior to and or during design approval meetings…real-time when needed, and with minimal render times if stills are needed.

Recommended Deliverables:
Real-time Preview via Revit 2013 or Still Frame Rendering via 360 Cloud Rendering

What Level of Detail is Needed?
Low Level of Detail - The designer should model only the “truth” in form they want to gain approval for.

Who is responsible for building the model and or the visualizations?
The Designer – modeling will be done in their Native Design Software (Revit)

When:
This technique is best used early in the design process, for internal design studies and client approvals.  Can also be used throughout design as new forms, layout, spaces need to be sold to the owner

What tools and methods will be used to create this visualization?

Revit is used for both modeling and Real-Time Previewing.  Autodesk’s 360 Cloud Renderer is used for high res Still frame rendering.

Can we reuse this down the road as our visualization needs change with design?
Yes…all methods shown for this technique are “non-destructive” to the design model.  All views and real-time graphic settings are saved in your Revit model via View Templates, to be used anytime during the design process.  For still frame renders simply resend these saved views to the Autodesk 360 Cloud Rendering Service.



Sure, you can set your view's Visual Style to "Hidden", and turn on Ambient Shadows in your Graphic Display Options.  While this might be sufficient for some, doing this will not allow you to generate "renderings" with this gyp board effect. To accomplish renderings using this technique within Revit, will require you to create a materials override on all objects in your model.  In true BIMevolution fashion, we want to do this without destroying any of the concurrent efforts/edits  taking place in the model by the rest of the team…this includes preserving any and all early material/texture studies that your designer might be in the process of assigning.  Given that Revit will not allow “per view” manipulation of material assignments, the quickest way to handle this is to create a special "phase", then apply that phase to your 3D views.
  1. (Optional) Start a New Revit Model and Link in your Project Model “Origin to Origin” This allows you to:
    • Have a 3D Visualization Model that’s always up to date
    • Eliminates the added overhead of 3D views and renderings in your Design/Construction Document Revit model
    • Provides a nondestructive environment where speed and flexibility is more important than worrying about how you’re affecting the rest of the team.

      Note: At times I prefer to create a File (Step 1 above) just for my 3D Views and Renderings, especially if there's a large project team accessing the model simultaneously.  This method also keeps the design/documentation mode clean of all the settings and views I create for presentations.
  2. Manage > Phases - Create a Unique Phase, inserting it “after” your last Phase in your Project.  I’ve named my Phase “HandBuilt Renders”.
  3. Assign your Material of Choice to the “Existing” Phase by using a Phase Graphic Override
    The default Material Assigned to all elements in your view will be “Phase – Exist”.  However, you do have the ability to adjust and or replace this material with anything you chose or create in your Revit Material Library.  As you can see from the settings below, I like to use the “Paper” material to add some texture to the model.  “Graphic Override” placed on the Material assigned to the “Existing” Phase.
  4. Assign the Phase “Handbuilt Renders” Phase to the 3D View you wish to render using this technique.  The result will be a Revit view that looks like the image below
      
  5. Adjust your Revit view’s Graphic Display Options to better simulate the handbuilt model look you’re after.  This will take some experimenting to suite your own personal preferences.  However when done, you should be able to achieve some pretty nice results (See Below) for your Real-time Revit views.  Note, how I set my View's visual style to "Realistic"
      
  6. Adjust your Visibility Graphics – you will notice in my images that all of my glazing elements have been turned off in this view.  You might prefer to leave them on, however I do not.  To suite my preferences I simply go into the view’s Visibility and Graphic Settings and turn Glazing off for Doors, Windows, and sometimes Curtain Walls.
  7. Create a Custom View Template  so you can reapply all your hard work to other views you wish to generate using this technique.  To do this I simply right-click on the view in my project browser and select  “Create View Template from View”.   I then give my View Template a name that resembles the Rendering Technique I have.
  8. Apply your View Template to as many views as you want…including your 2D Views for Live Presentation and Real-time view manipulation during your Client Approval Meetings.
The Results?  You no have the ability to present your model in real-time via Revit using this technique, or your can send your views to quickly render for some added pizzazz.  I use Autodesk's 360 Rendering service to speed things up.

Did You Know? - Project Parameters Can be Pushed

Did you know you could push existing Revit Project Parameters from one project to another through the use of Schedules?  

  1. Open the project you want to add project parameters to.
  2. "Insert" Tab > "Insert 2D Elements from File"
  3. Select the File that has the Project Parameters you want to duplicate and click "open"
  4. A dialog will pop up showing all of the 2D views in that project.  Select the Schedules you want to import into your project. 
  5. If the schedules selected for import have Project Parameter Fields in them, those schedules along with their related Project Parameters will be added to your new project.
Hint, Hint...ever thought about creating Revit Project Files (not templates) that have all of your typical Project Details and Schedules in them?  Using the steps above you could quickly insert them when you need them, without weighing down your Project with a heavy project template. 

Did You Know? - Material Assignments

Material Assignments
Ever get tired of waiting on Revit 2013's Material Browser to load every time you want to assign a common material to Multiple elements and or Revit Categories?  Did you know you could shave off a few seconds and assign Materials by copy/paste or by simply typing your material names in as values?  All you need to know is the material name stored in your Material Library, and you're in business to save some time.

Rapid Visualization - My Latest Project


BIMevolution is dedicated to all aspects of design that can benefit from the evolution of the BIM model.  As we all know, visualization plays a big part in helping the forward progress of our building designs.  Before our designs can move forward in multiple phases throughout the project, we as designers must continuously use visuals to sale and gain approval for our ideas.  Unlike many who today "default" to photoreal rendering creation, I've lived through the good ole days when rendering technology flat out sucked if you wanted to generate photoreal renderings in any kind of hurry.  It is for this reason (and to save you the same forehead wrinkles I've earned throughout the years) that I will have a blog series focused on an old tactic using common but modern technology that all designers typically have at their disposal...an approach I'm calling "Rapid Visualization"

Rapid Visualization promotes a simplistic approach for creating the "right" visuals, at the "right" time, from your ever evolving BIM models.  The techniques used will be directly connected and or linked to the design/documentation model (Revit in my case), and will "evolve" as your BIM model becomes more defined.  We will focus on creating a road map based on answers to the following questions, which I urge all of you to ask before approaching any visualization need.

    I've Arrived! - And So We Begin

    So before I start sharing my thoughts on BIM, I thought it might be wise for my first post to focus on a little of my background in the industry.  This is not to persuade my readers into thinking I have advanced intellectual powers when it comes to BIM, but to instead inform you of who I am, where I've been, and where I'm going with BIM and other design/visualization technologies in our industry.  I will never and have never claimed to be an expert, nor will I admit that for anyone else.
    And so we begin - a brief history on the blogger .


    My Career Path?
    1987-1997 = Civil Engineering with a focus on 3D Visualization
    1997-2006 = Architectural Design with a focus on 3D Visualizations and BIM/Revit 
    2006-2009 = 3D Visualizations and Creative Art Director for a Video Production Firm
    2009-Current = BIM Specialist Manager within HNTB's Incubation Group

    Brief BIM Background: 
    I was first introduced to BIM in 2000 while working at CDFM2 Architects as their Creative Vision Group Manager.  A shiny headed guy named Phil Read visited our office and dilated our eyes with this magical pixie dust called Revit.  At the time my focus was on 3D modeling and Visualization technologies, so Phil had perfect timing.  Soon after my introduction to Revit, I found myself waving the flag for BIM and leading/supporting a group of Architects on not one..but two of the largest Revit projects in the U.S. at that time.  H&R Block Headquarters in KC, and the 1 million sq.ft. IRS Headquarters a few blocks away.  

    Throughout the years I've changed companies a few times, mainly due to my enjoyment in helping others learn BIM for the first time, and or watching them grasp the idea of BIM and push the industry forward for all of us.  That said, I’ve actively pursued positions in the marketplace that focused on the development, implementation, training, and support of both new and existing BIM technologies...with Revit still being my primary BIM tool of choice. 

    In 2009, My friend and long time mentor Phil Read asked me to join his new BIM R&D Group at HNTB.  Needless to say, it presented a great opportunity for me to focus on future BIM and Visualization technologies, so I joined Phil and hit the ground running.  Today, while now absent of my great mentor Phil, who now is literally floating on another cloud now (M-six.com), I still find myself just as passionate about the technologies in our industry...and like Phil once did for me, showering others with the magic pixie dust.
